Mind Education – - What and why?
Mind-education can be described as a toolbox of knowledge and methods. A basic premise is that everyone is different and that this toolbox must therefore be adapted to the needs, background, and knowledge of the individual. A Mind-education learning process is therefore a personalized journey that includes learning and experimental testing of a number of alternative methods applied to your own issues.
Mind Education is therefore not a place for passive learning, but a place where you actively engage with and test the tools in areas important to you. In this way you gain valuable experience by choosing which techniques you want to work with.
Processes and tools
The knowledge and processes used in the course include elements from cognitive therapy, positive psychology, psychoanalysis, Buddhist psychology and a number of recent scientific findings in psychological research and clinical medical science. An important element is what is called * Cognitive metaposition: When you are in a "cognitive metaposition" you “watch and analyze” yourself "from a mental position “outside yourself" and you turn off “the inner autopilot". In this context, y "autopilot" means the flow of emotions, thinking and impulses that govern a large part of most people's lives daily. With this course you can train to become "Captain of your own ship" to a greater extent than before. This is also the starting point from which you analyze yourself, your values, emotions and actions. You will also train yourself to be able to analyze what you are thinking and doing from several perspectives. I will guide you through this process, but I will never scrutinize you and tell you what is right / wrong. In this way, we ensure that your learning always starts from where you are. If, in addition to stress, you also suffer from anxiety etc, it may be relevant to introduce an analysis of whether one or more underlying mental trauma of physical or psychosocial nature can be identified. Here it is relevant to introduce techniques used in trauma-focused therapy.
The elements of the Mind-education course
Risk profile- and quality of life analysis
This is a preliminary analysis, where you will receive a number of questionnaires that provide the basis for a 2 hour conversation with me. After this conversation, you will know more about what opportunities you have to improve your physical and mental risk profile. You will give your preferences and wishes for the changes you want in your life. Based on this, you decide to focus of one or more of the education modules listed below. You have the flexibly try them out sequentially or to make a plan from the start. You decide the priorities and learning speed.
The interpersonal module teaches you about conflicts and how they affect your physical and mental balance and well-being, as well as the long-term effects they make have on your health. You learn to analyze how conflicts arise and are maintained, from your own point of view and from an external perspective. You learn tools that make you more aware of your own contribution to conflicts, as well as how to avoid or minimize conflicts.
Quality of Life Module
The starting point for this module is the analysis result from your initial personal risk profile study and the wishes you have for improving your quality of life. You learn about the alternatives you have, based on the latest research results in the field. You can then choose if you want to get started with specific activities and whether you need training and supervision in this process.
Basic anti-stress module
YYou will learn about the latest knowledge about stress and both new and established preventive intervention options that are available today. I use a research-based "expanded stress concept", which means that it focuses on more than just work-related stress. Stress can be due to both physical trauma and disease, as well as psychosocial stresses. We map the sum of the different old and new stresses in your life. We discuss what knowledge and training are needed to minimize the most significant sources of your stress. You can then prioritize what specific training and support you need.
Fear and anxiety module
Many people are affected by different types of fears (eg death, illness or losing their job, fitness, wealth or reputation). There are a number of methods available that can reduce or eliminate this fear and anxiety. However, you may also have stress, anxiety or fear for unknown reasons. It is usually connected to "hidden stress", which means, you feel stress and anxiety, but you are not even aware of its origin. I can help you handle and sometimes identify and alleviate hidden sources of anxiety and stress. There are a number of methods available under the category of trauma-focused therapy.
Goals and meaning-module
All too often, when looking back, people regret how they’ve spent their lives and they think that they should have prioritized things differently. They discover that life was shorter than they had expected and that many of the achievements they had worked hard towards disappeared too quickly or did not give them the joy and satisfaction they had hoped for. I offer to coach you through a process where you reconsider these essential questions so that you can use this new understanding for your future life.
Body Balance Module
The starting point for this module is your wish to improve your physical risk profile and physical health. It may be that being overweight is one of the issues. Most often, poor physical health involves mental suffering and stress. One option for boosting your wellbeing is exercise which can be an effective remedy for stress. It can also prevent or minimize stress-related physical diseases. I advise you on healthy lifestyle choices and how mental resources are needed to change the habits that are necessary to improve your physical health both in the short and long term. I advise you on exercise habits and exercise if you need this. I collaborate with an expert in healthy food that can guide you on what diet is optimal for you to achieve your health goals and / or to reduce your lifestyle risks.
Who are the ideal candidate for this course?
You are a healthy, intelligent person with a busy working life, but…
You have moments where your resources are not sufficient to cope with the challenges of your life.
Your brain is working constantly to solve all challenges and concerns, and sometimes you feel like you are not able to find the right answers.
You seem to be out of balance and that your life is too stressful and challenging
Perhaps you may occasionally experience chaos and conflict with your neighbor, boss or colleagues
You want a better life with less stress, but you want to continue with the challenges that you can master, and which inspire and motivate you.
Perhaps you are not entirely satisfied with the way your life is going despite all your efforts. You think there are circumstances that prevent you from getting a better life, but you see no opportunities to do something about it. You feel trapped.
You have also considered finding another job, but your previous job was also not ideal, and you are not sure that this will help. You have heard that many of your friends have similar thoughts, and you believe that many people feel under pressure. It seems to be connected to our civilization and time, but you still have an inner driving force to make a change for the better.
This course is dedicated and adapted to busy people who have limited time for long internship courses, but who are open to personal training via the internet (Skype video conferences and mail), or personal meetings that can be integrated into their everyday life.
What is Mind-Education NOT?
"Mind Education" is not for people with active serious mental illness or for those who take psychopharmaceutical drugs daily. If you suffer from a mental illness or acute severe stress, you should instead contactthe formal health care system, or one of the many professional providers for help with acute severe stress, etc.
Practical information about the Mind-education course
The course consists of a series of personal meetings or interactive Skype sessions held as video conferences (with camera) or personal meetings and associated homework between the sessions. It is, therefore, necessary to have a good internet connection and a PC or iPad or similar, which supports Skype with video. On average you will participate in such a video conference or personal meeting once a week, or more frequently, or when it is convenient to you. You choose the best times, among the available options. Long-term booking will ensure you exactly the times and dates that are best for you. There will be homework and practical exercises in the period between the sessions. Written instructions are provided for all homework, and the completed work must be returned no later than 1-2 days before the next session for me to prepare the next session with you. Your homework is the starting point for the coming session. It will not be possible to benefit from this course without fully participating in the associated homework. Homework and your commitment are a very important part of training and learning. Therefore, you should not sign up for this course if you do not have time in your daily schedule to complete the homework. Average homework will require 1-2 hours of active effort per week. The number of Skype sessions/meetings will be tailored to your needs. Follow-up sessions can be arranged, where you will go into depth with selected course elements.
